Summer Series '11 Race 1

Well, with clear dry weather, we at last managed to get Race 1 of the Summer Series off the ground with 24 keen athletes, pumped and ready to rock, plus a few new first timers (Welcome).

The familiar sound of the starters horn echoed across the vacant beach as everyone charged in to calm warm waters for the 300m swim.

Clearly everyone was keen to have a good race as there were some solid swim times before they hit the bikes for the two loop, 8km ride, with the surprisingly challenging ride over to Big Wave bay. And then it was on with the trainers for the 2km dash out and back to the finish line.

A great first heat, with some stonking finishing times, but it seems the first of the 3 heats had taken its toll and Heat 2 started with only about 50% of the field. A strong finisher in heat 2 was our youngest member, 10 year old Jack, who will soon be whipping his dads A…..’hem…..backside!

The last heat saw most people back at it, whilst a few opted out having been challenged enough by the first two heats. Race results are on the link here
so you can see you splits and start number crunching and of course compare yourself to last year. But don’t be too harsh on yourselves, as it is the first race of the season and hopefully as the season progresses you’ll see your times come down and be able to see in which discipline you are making improvements. Thanks to all those that helped Marshal or support between races. A personal apology to all of you for not bringing the sausages and coffee, I’ve had my wrist slapped and I will ensure you are all fed and caffined up after the next race – and talking of which, check out the annual race calendar on the web site (under the picture of ‘Member of the Month’) We will relocate it at some point to somewhere more sensible J

So, next weekend is the 48km Team Time Trial – we had about 15 teams last year, so get talking to your mates and get a team together. You can do me a great favour by registering your team directly on our web site (there is no fee – it’s a free race) and the link is here
If you are having trouble finding members or you’re a single rider looking for a team, email Drilly at the club info email address and I’ll see what I can do for you. I’m not a dating agency, so make best endevours first before pinging me – cheers.

A quick note on safety

Whilst the club does try and provide Marshals, as we did at today’s race for the mini-roundabout at the bottom of Shek-O hill, it is still everybody’s responsibility to race safely.

Unfortunately one of our riders today collided with a car in the Big Wave Bay car park. The car pulled out and 2 of the 3 riders managed to swerve either side but unfortunately the 3rd had no room to maneuver. There was no injury, but the rider was of course well shaken up and retired from the rest of the heats.

Additionally a report has come in from a Shek O resident that a Dragon "cut the village roundabout round the wrong way, and came flying round the corner on the wrong side of the road almost causing a traffic accident"

Please let us all race safe and not jeopardize our insurance.
