Summer Series - Event 1

Wow – what a turn out for the first race of the summer series. We had 49 registered, a few no shows on the day, but we raced with 46 Dragons.

The weather took a turn for the better and blessed us with a clear and not too hot day with a beautifully calm sea. The current venue at South Bay seemed to work out very well, as it was much more exclusive and the course much more demanding than Shek-O, although roadworks again forced us to shorten the bike course and increase it by 2 loops to keep the target distance at 8km. But it was a twisty hilly ride which I think suited the power riders more than the endurance riders out there.

The buoys were out in the bay making a nice anti-clockwise arc for us to follow, and the first swim leg was rather frantic to say the least, as 46 of us dived into the water and started to converge. The short sharp run up the slope out of the water to the transition area got the heart pumping, and then it was onto the bikes for the first of the 4 x 2km loops, which started off on an up hill. We had a few scary moments as the faster riders caught the tail-enders as they came back into transition and the tail-enders were turning for their last lap! And then it was on with the trainers for the 2km loop – again starting off on an uphill segment.

Joroen (half man half fish) was first man out of the water followed closely by Ben, Mike, Gregg, Bemet, James and Turbo – and the 3 races saw this same group tussling it out at the front. Kate Rutherford had 3 stonking races with phenomenal swims in each.

The triple race combo worked well again for everyone, as many new joiners and first time triathletes raced just the first and third legs having the second race to recoup. The more experienced athletes finding the challenge of trying to complete all three races at near flat out pace, pushing their VO2 levels to the max.

The race results are attached; unfortunately the first race was a bit chaotic for our time keeper, so we have not been able to grab all your split times, although we have most times for the second and third races. Timing is on a best endeavors basis as we are doing this without timing chips etc.

Summer Series Event 2 is on 5-June and will again be at South Bay – as we will keep an eye on the roadworks at Shek-O.
