"Race to Enlightenment" - Tung Chung to Buddha

posted 8 Sep 2013, 05:35 by HK Dragons Triathlon Club

It seems the slightly damp weather Saturday morning deterred a few riders, but we still had a great turnout of 36 cyclists, who were up for the challenge.
The wet did cause problems for some riders, especially those who tend to stand for the climbs, as a loss of weight over the rear tire caused too many wheel spins and a loss of effort and rhythm, which definitely was not need on a climb as tough as the beast.

A main lead group of 5 immediately formed on the Beast climb with Alexandre Reinert (26 Coaching) on the front setting a hard and relentless pace.  Superb climbing by Alex saw him get a gap on the group near the top and it looked like he would ride over the Beast solo, however John Tonks (Pro Bike) dug deep and was able to bridge back to him at the summit and the two went over the Beast together, followed by Clinton Leong (HK Dragons) a little further back, then Ed Cluer (Colossi) and Mark Cook (Team Direct Asia) a further few seconds behind.  Everyone sensibly took it very carefully down the Beast descent in the wet conditions and then Clinton, Ed and Mark regrouped together on the flat section and formed a chase pack in pursuit of the 2 leaders who were eventually caught.  The group of 5 were back together again and rode in a pack on the long  and misty climb to the Buddha.  A short pause was required due to roadwork traffic lights but once green, the hostilities resumed and it was Mark Cook who finally took the line honours followed by John, Alex, Ed then Clinton in that order.   The second group of 8 riders (4 buffalo’s and 4 Dragons) were next across the line trailing by over 7mins from the leading 5.

A great race that really tests both the legs and the cardio capacity - and I understand there were a few close to chucking further down the rankings, good effort – it means you were trying hard J

Thanks to everyone for attending and making this race what it is. Sadly (or thankfully – depending on your point of view) that was the last Dragons Race to Enlightenment for this year. But, it is not the last race on the calendar – please pen in the below dates in your diaries and we’ll be seeing you all again soon.
