Dragons King of the Mountains Competition 2015

posted 5 May 2015, 22:26 by HK Dragons Triathlon Club   [ updated 5 Dec 2015, 05:27 ]

Welcome all to the new Dragons King of the Mountains competition 2015. Now in its third year of running, this is one of the most popular competitions we have, and one of the most eagerly contested.

All you need to do is ride as fast as you can over the period 1 January 2015 to 30 November 2015, on 11 well-used Strava segments around Hong Kong Island, plus The Beast (one of the toughest climbs in Hong Kong). The man and woman with the quickest cumulative time across all segments by 30th November wins the coveted Hong Kong Dragons Polka Dot Jersey and has their name forever inscribed on the permanent Hong Kong Dragons King of the Mountains Shield - along with all the other winners in the past. And given a hallmark of the Dragons is to be as inclusive as possible, we are also running again this year the Challenge Competition, open to all who climb the Peak in 16.30 mins or more. The Challenge competition is the race for the Best of the Rest, and the winner here, also gets their name inscribed on the Dragons King of the Mountains Challenge Competition shield.

This year as in previous years we have asked our current male and female holders of the King of the Mountains to replace a climb each. This year, out has gone Stanley Fort (after only a year in) and also Nam Fung; and in is the iconic Cobbles in Shouson Hill and the ominous and brutal Broadwood Road in Happy Valley. These and the rest of the list below are all well-used climbs and often traversed in our training rides, so you all have plenty of opportunity to get to know them.

So in total 3 prizes up for grabs, as well as of course bragging rights as one of the best climbers in Hong Kong. Our current holders, Justin Baldacchino for the Men’s competition, YannKai Oh for the Women’s competition (for the 2nd consecutive year) and Nick Adamus for the challenge competition have gloried in their fame since they were formally awarded their prizes at the Dragons/SIRs Christmas Party last year - now is your chance to join them.

The rules are very simple.

1) You have to complete all 12 segments by midnight (HK time) on Friday 30th November 2015. Segment links are below. Look at these carefully to see the start and finish points.

2) Only the fastest times as recorded on Strava on the predefined segments below between 1 January 2015 and 12 December 2015 will count

3)  You are not permitted any motorised assistance at all to ride the segments.

4) You are allowed to draft and ride in packs  to achieve the fastest times

5) Strava times are final. We know Strava is not perfect and GPS signals sometimes go AWOL, but Strava is usually accurate 99% of the time. If you are unhappy with the way Strava has recorded your time, do the ride again!

6) You must upload your ride within 2 weeks of doing the segment. Holding back your times to lull your competitors into a false sense of security is not permitted (yes it has happened before!). Our race commissaires will be watching upload times very closely!

7) Anyone on Strava can enter the competition. It is open to all and not just Dragons members, but you must also join the Dragons page on Strava here: for your time to count and only members of the Dragons will win the much coveted Polka Dot KOTM jersey and have their name inscribed on the Dragons KOTM shield. To become a Dragons member Click Here to Register for Dragon's 2015 Membership - it is cheap to join the Dragons and well worth the investment!

8) Only complete rides uploaded directly from recording devices (such as Garmin or iphone etc) should be used - uploaded GPX files, cropped rides, or rides that do not have a logical start and end point will be heavily scrutinized by the Dragons Strava Police (you have been warned!).

9) Our official timekeeper and Chief of Dragons Strava Police is Pat Gorta, who will maintain the official leaderboard times and oversee adherence to the rules and spirit of the competition. Race Commissaires are Clinton Leong and Sheel Kohli

Good Luck!!
