Best website for Garmin Forerunner? 2008/06/11 12:02 Karma: 0&nbsp&nbsp
Hi

I just splashed out on a Forerunner 405 and a bit disappointed with the software that it comes with.

Anyone have any recommendations for top websites or software which they use?

Cheers
Steve

Stevo- Did you ever find a decent website for the Garmin 405? I'm thinking of getting one. What are your views? Any good or should I just stick to a Polar HRM? Anything appreciated before I splash out....in a manner of speaking! Cheers! Sam

I love the 405 and highly recommend it. I won't be using my Polar again.

There are some small downsides:

- Not guaranteed for swimming. They say it's ok for up to 1 meter but shouldn't be used for swimming. You could get around that by maybe putting it under your swim-cap

- Battery only lasts for 8 hours under 'full recording' conditions (i.e. using GPS and HR) so if you're thinking of recording your ironman you had better be quick
For normal day-time conditions the battery is fine (well over a week I think)

Anyway...there are a number of websites which seem ok.

Garmin's own site is basic:
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/179073

Although one of my new voyeurisms is to type in a different number on the end of that address and you will see somebody's route
(This is one of my favourites. The inventiveness and creativity is astounding on this route! http://connect.garmin.com/activity/215597)

I did get a couple of other recommendations, such as http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/
But I haven't actually been able to use them much, as I haven't been able to train recently

And http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/china/hong-kong/539303433
Has lots of routes which people have put up.

Hi again Stevo,
Thanks for the info! I did go and buy myself a 405 in the end and I agree: It has more or less made my Polar RS400 obsolete.

I understand that the problem with using the 405 underwater is not its waterproof-ness (!) -It's more to do with the fact that under water they say you can get a nasty electric shock/burn from the charging terminals at the back of the wrist unit. I'll keep an eye out on user discussion forums (when I get a moment to find one) but it might just be that we need to think of a way of covering those 2 pesky little contacts while in the water. After all, the sweat we pour out in HK must be equivalent to swimming in the Dead Sea!

Have you tried using the Auto Lap function? I'm doing a lot of track work at the moment and it measures lap times to within about 2meters around a 400m track. Same for any circuit/loop/out-and-back course you might be doing reps on.

I'll check out the websites you suggest and let you know anythng I find.

Happy training/racing!

Sam
