Saw one at Bicycle World which is "Rim Drive" instead of the conventional way of having a roller under the tyre. It clips onto your rim and will not eat up your tyre. It is around HK$2080. Check it out!

You can get two types of trainers, stationary and rollers. Both utilize rolling resistance via large heavy rollers. Its rather a crude method of applying resistance to the wheel, there's nothing especially innovative about it.

With Stationary trainers you clip the rear wheel in, and the front wheel remains on the floor or on a phone book, etc to raise it up level with the rear wheel. On the rollers, both wheels are placed onto the device and you move more freely. As this will likely take some practice, its advised to start inside a door-way to get your balance.

The higher end models stationary trainers will provide some kind of additional resistance mechanism, which you can adjust either at the rear wheel, or via cable that connects to your handlebar. Some offer something called "gel movement" which I dont entirely understand.

The rollers are probably the best in mimiking natural movement on the bike, as you also have lateral movement.

I hope the info is helpful
